With over three decades of practice, Chng Nai Wee (b.1969, Singapore) explores the intersections of diverse domains from medicine and technology, to finance and design.
In INTERMISSION, Chng presents his design WATERWALL HOUSEconstructed in 2007, which intergrates the navigational experience of waterfalls in the spatial topography of split-storeys and voids, delineated by fair-faced concrete walls, aluminium screens and glass.
Populated within the space is MOLECULUX - Luminescent Bodies in Hyperspace 2001, where schematic molecular geometries are translated into monumental sculptural forms, and Market Forces - Contemporaneous Action in Technology 2004-2024, a mixed media work translating live market data into an audio-visual depiction of the geopolitical rivalry between China and America within the technological sphere.
Nested within the space are drawings of planar surfaces, folds and demarcation lines of architectural draftsmanship in Ada series 2020contrasting with paintings of fluidity and shimmer in the evergreen Garden of Eden series 1990. Both explore formal properties but converge into emotional faces as in Angst 2004.
The exhibition also features Like or Not? 2002, a dual sculpture of a durian and housefly commissioned for the Esplanade opening that explores biomimetic architecture, cultural bias, and learned behavioural responses through humour and scale.
